Donating and clearing out before you sell

Buyers open every closet. Roughly a third of what you own should be gone before the photographer arrives — and most of it doesn't need to go in a dumpster.

    Start with the four-pile method

Work one room at a time and sort into four piles: keep, donate, sell, and toss. Don't revisit a room twice — the second pass is where people stall out and end up storing things they'll never unpack.

If you haven't touched it in a year and it isn't seasonal or sentimental, it goes. Storage costs money every month; a cleaner house makes money once.

Where to donate in the Valley

Most Valley donation centers take clothing, small housewares, books, and working electronics. Furniture is where it gets picky — anything torn, stained, or missing hardware usually gets turned away, so photograph it before you load the truck and call ahead.

    • Goodwill Southern California — clothing, housewares, electronics; drop-off donation centers across the Valley
    • Habitat for Humanity ReStore — cabinets, doors, appliances, light fixtures, and building materials, often with pickup
    • Salvation Army — furniture and large-item pickup by appointment
    • Local schools, shelters, and animal rescues — towels, blankets, and linens they can actually use

    What nobody takes

Mattresses, older tube TVs, paint, chemicals, tires, and pressed-board furniture that's already sagging are generally refused by donation centers. Paint and chemicals go to a county household hazardous waste roundup; e-waste goes to a certified recycler.

    Bulky-item pickup

LA Sanitation offers free bulky-item pickup for city residents — couches, mattresses, appliances, and large debris. It's genuinely free, and it books out, so schedule it a week or two before your photo date rather than the night before.

Outside city limits, check with your county or contract hauler; most Valley cities run a similar program a few times a year.

    Sell what's actually worth selling

Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp move furniture fast if you price it to disappear. Set a hard deadline: anything unsold 72 hours before photos gets donated. Chasing an extra forty dollars is not worth delaying your listing.
